EXHIBITION
Featured in "Brooklyn On My Mind. Black Visual Artists from the WPA to the Present." By Dr. Myrah Brown Green
Join us on Wednesday, June 26th for the opening of "In Our Own Words". Curated by Author, Writer and Artist, Keisha-Gaye Anderson, this experience brings together a diverse group of immigrant poets and writers to share work that centers the multi-faceted immigrant narrative and reflects the wider world through their unique lenses vs. imposed narratives of the dominant culture. The event is set against the backdrop of an art exhibition, Co-Curated by Larry Weekes and Rey Naldo, that showcases works that echo this theme and bring light to underrepresented, and often unexplored, perspectives of the immigrant experience.

New Sudanese Communities in Brooklyn- Abdalla & his Family
On the day that I went to shoot the portraits it was Ramadan and although they were fasting, Abdalla and his family graciously invited me into their home to share an afternoon and some conversation. He told me about his life in Sudan, how he met his wife and the friends and family that he left behind, and that despite the horrible violence that forced him to leave, he loves his homeland very much. Here in New York Abdalla is a hard working cab driver it is how he supports his wife, his aunt and Hope, his beautiful daughter. But Abdalla is also a talented artist, it is his first love, after his family. He shared with me a number of his stunning paintings. Some were of traditional life in Sudan and others more contemporary, like the two portraits that he said speaks to his love for his new home in the USA, one is of Abraham Lincoln and the other is of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Truly inspiring.

Art 4 Darfur~ Art in Activism

One day in 2007, me and D. Lammie-Hanson decided that we would do a benefit to try to help the innocent victims of the genocide in Darfur, so in a little gallery in Bed Stuy called 1110 run by the SONYA'S we called out the troops...
The evening was a blessing and thanks to those magical souls who donated their time, their paintings, photos, prints, drawings, lyrics, poems, songs, their love heart and soul & their hard earned cash we raised $6000.00.
The proceeds from the Art 4 Darfur silent auction were donated directly to the organization of the winning bidder’s choice from a selection of NGO’s (Non Governmental Organizations) dedicated to improving the lives of the innocent victims of the Genocide in Darfur.
