EXHIBITION &EDITORIAL
Sanctuary brings together nine artists using a vast array of media to explore their connection to place. Pamella Allen, Cecilia André, María Dusamp, Stephen Hilger, Guillermo Mena, LuLu Meng, Jeffrey Morabito, Frank Parga, and Manju Shandler create works from handmade paper, wood, sand, oil paint, and other mediums to layer intrinsic associations of materiality to the “landscapes” they are depicting. Their works convey relationships with specific and symbolic sites, rendering the locations themselves or implying their lingering essence. These artists evoke the spirit or soul of a place through themes of emotional connection, mysticism, identity and cultural heritage, presenting examples of the interconnectedness of the migratory experience, synthesizing the perception of one's home through new geographies.

Journey to the Center: Works by Pamella Allen
Experience the power of mandalas as you "Journey to the Center". Mandala, Sanskrit for circle is formed with symbols intricately placed in a circular pattern. Traditionally, the Buddha's mind is abstractly represented with mostly organic creations like flowers, crystals and trees. Instead, Pamella Allen draws from her familiar, past memories and new explorations. ~Dr. Myrah Brown Green, Curator
The Mass Comm Art Gallery at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York has shown works by students, faculty and community artists throughout the past decade. During these challenging times, like most institutions, our trajectory has changed. However, we are afforded the opportunity to now expand our artist reach and touch a wider audience across the globe through a virtual platform.
Our inaugural exhibition features the masterful work of Pamella Allen. In this magnificent exhibition entitled, “Journey to the Center”, curated by Dr. Myrah Brown Green, her peace filled mandalas do not only mesmerize through their visual beauty. They also serve as a blueprint that may help guide us back to our center so that we can make adjustments and heal what has been altered during this tumultuous time in history. Upon entering the exhibition, one our talented BFA program’s dance professors, Jade Charon Robertson collaborates with Pamella Allen in a short video where together they bring a mandala to life.
“When our minds are conditioned to live close to the perimeter of the Mandala—away from the Now center—we have a false sense of self and a mistaken view of others that blinds us to their essence and us to our own.” ~R. Moss

Overjoyed & Honored to be accepted into Ma’s House Residency Program! @mashousestudio Ma's House
I cannot wait to see how the wisdom of the Shinnecock People and the natural landscapes they preserve will impact the works I will create in my residency & beyond. Thank you @jeremynative, the Shinnecock Nation and Ancestor ‘Princess Silva Arrow’ (Loretta Silva also know as ‘Ma’) for opening your home, heart and wisdom to making a safe creative space for #BIPOC artists grow! #thankyou Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio is led by Indigenous artist Jeremy Dennis. The house will serve as a communal art space based on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton, New York. The family house, built in the 1960s, will serve as Dennis’ house to manage the project that includes a residency program for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), art studio, library, along with hosting an array of art and history-based programs for tribe members and the broader local community. Since June 2020, Indigenous visual artist and photographer Jeremy Dennis has endeavored to restore the Silva family home he grew up in to make Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio (hereinafter referred to as “Ma’s House”) a communal and safe space for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) artists to create work, participate in artist residencies and be offered a place to exhibit their contemporary work on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation. Dennis hopes that Ma’s House will be a space for creativity, healing, imagining, and liberation. |

Join us on Wednesday, June 26th for the opening of "In Our Own Words". Curated by Author, Writer and Artist, Keisha-Gaye Anderson, this experience brings together a diverse group of immigrant poets and writers to share work that centers the multi-faceted immigrant narrative and reflects the wider world through their unique lenses vs. imposed narratives of the dominant culture. The event is set against the backdrop of an art exhibition, Co-Curated by Larry Weekes and Rey Naldo, that showcases works that echo this theme and bring light to underrepresented, and often unexplored, perspectives of the immigrant experience.

New Sudanese Communities in Brooklyn- Abdalla & his Family
On the day that I went to shoot the portraits it was Ramadan and although they were fasting, Abdalla and his family graciously invited me into their home to share an afternoon and some conversation. He told me about his life in Sudan, how he met his wife and the friends and family that he left behind, and that despite the horrible violence that forced him to leave, he loves his homeland very much. Here in New York Abdalla is a hard working cab driver it is how he supports his wife, his aunt and Hope, his beautiful daughter. But Abdalla is also a talented artist, it is his first love, after his family. He shared with me a number of his stunning paintings. Some were of traditional life in Sudan and others more contemporary, like the two portraits that he said speaks to his love for his new home in the USA, one is of Abraham Lincoln and the other is of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Truly inspiring.

Art 4 Darfur~ Art in Activism
One day in 2007, me and D. Lammie-Hanson decided that we would do a benefit to try to help the innocent victims of the genocide in Darfur, so in a little gallery in Bed Stuy called 1110 run by the SONYA'S we called out the troops...
The evening was a blessing and thanks to those magical souls who donated their time, their paintings, photos, prints, drawings, lyrics, poems, songs, their love heart and soul & their hard earned cash we raised $6000.00.
The proceeds from the Art 4 Darfur silent auction were donated directly to the organization of the winning bidder’s choice from a selection of NGO’s (Non Governmental Organizations) dedicated to improving the lives of the innocent victims of the Genocide in Darfur.
